Niacin

What: Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, is an organic compound and one of the forty to eighty essential human nutrients used by your body to turn carbohydrates into energy. This solid is colorless and water-soluble, and has been used to increase HDL cholesterol levels in the blood. Niacin is found in variety of foods, including liver, chicken, beef, fish, cereal, peanuts and legumes, and is also synthesized from tryptophan, which is found in meat, dairy and eggs (Wiki).

Niacin is used in skincare to improve tone and texture, and reduce hyperpigmentation. The ingredient is said to strengthen the skin barrier, moisturize, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and create a smoother, firmer surface.

Niacin is currently being researched as a treatment for acne and premature aging, as well as a possible preventative to skin cancer.

Origin: Niacin is extracted from certain plants, like Soybean oil.
