Turmeric

What: Turmeric is a relative of the ginger family and native to tropical South Asia. Its active component, curcumin, gives the spice its vibrant color and valued medicinal properties. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities, containing antioxidants which protect against cell damage and support the immune system. Turmeric has a history of effectively treating inflammatory diseases, digestive disorders, and protecting against environmental toxicants.

Origin: The rhizomes (roots) of the turmeric plant are boiled and dried, then ground into powder. This powder is used in food, dyeing, and cosmetics. (Wiki).

Products Found In: Turmeric is currently being used in sunscreen formulation and in some cosmetic products to impart a glow and ward off bacterial growth.

Toxicity:  Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is generally classified as non-toxic or harmful.(EWG). Initial studies have shown Turmeric to have possible anti-cancer properties and may be beneficial in treating Alzheimer’s Disease. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is currently funding further studies on curcuma, to determine its full range of health benefits.
